This and that...

Stone cold scary, Motor City madness, and education under attack...

I've been having a back and forth with Rodger Martin about an old 32-foot sharpie design of the Presto type by Walt Scott that we both seem to rather like.

What can I say, great minds think alike...

Well... More or less. Rodger thinks the sails should be one thing and I think they should be something else but at least we both agree that a schooner is the right way to go.

The problem is, that when comparing sails, there is really bugger all good information about to base your decisions on as it is far too often a case of comparing apples and oranges when you are comparing, say, a modern square headed sail to an old gaff sail. Truth be told, it's mostly conjecture and not a lot of scientific method in the process or mix.

Which brings me around to the fact that the newest issue of Practical Boat Owner actually does some testing of gaff rig and a modern square headed sail using two identical hulls... Personally, I find the actual tests and results somewhat problematic but it is just the sort of thing I'd like to see more of. It's a worthwhile read.

Speaking of Practical Boat Owner, I'll go out on a limb and say it is easily one of the best sailing magazines anywhere and that one issue of PBO generally contains more useful information than a year's worth of Sail or a year-and-a-half of Cruising World.

Though, there is one problem with PBO (and its sister publication Yachting Monthly) and that is it's just silly expensive. A digital subscription will set you back £37.99 (over $58) a year which I think you'll agree has a serious OUCH factor for us frugal cruising folks.
