Practical Sailor has an excellent post on PFDs that you really should try and read.

While I'm aware that for some, discussing PFDs can be a trigger or political subject. So all I'll say is that the article makes sense and if you rely on an inflatable PFD you really should manually check yours by inflating it to make sure that the bladder inflates and will hold air for longer than you care to tread water.

Just saying.
