A couple of thoughts on the annual tool purge...

On the problematic nature of oil and water, something on the subject of corruption, and this might be worth reading if you live on the East or Gulf coasts...

Being that it's January, I've been feeling the need to do my yearly tool purge... Which is where I pull out every tool on the boat, make sure they all work, and reconsider keeping those that have set dormant without use for a year or more.

Tools, as a rule, are hard to throw away... You never know when that one tool you have not used in a couple of years will be just the right or only tool for a job that may crop up some time in the future so, it is not quite as simple as getting rid of those fuel filters sitting around that are no longer needful because you switched over to electric propulsion a bunch of years back...

That said, there is always the "Well, someone might need this very thing down the line" thing where, while I might never use this tool, some other boat person just may need it. Sort of like carrying a jack when you walk to the store on the off chance that you might come across a guy who has a flat and does not have a jack to put his spare on. Face it, you can't carry enough tools (or spares) to sort out everyone's possible problems and carrying twenty extra pounds or more of useless (to you) tools on the off chance is simply not very bright and is not happy making for the waterline.

But yeah, I hate to give up tools...

So anyway, I expect some time next week I'll be trekking to the local animal shelter flea market to drop off all those tools that are just not pulling their weight.
