A peek at the new tool kit...

On learning another language, Vermont take note, and the words "raging hurricane" caught my attention...

So what does the new leaner and lighter tool kit actually look like?

Well, for one, I've taken my two DeWalt drill/drivers, assorted batteries and chargers to the local thrift shop and replaced them with a hand drill, a brace and bit, and a Yankee.

The egg beater drill is more than able to do 90% of the drilling needs for boat projects, does not consume power in the process, and is quite a lot lighter and smaller than the DeWalt it replaces.

The brace and bit does drill of course, but more importantly it's main use on boat projects is as a screwdriver on steroids. I've driven thousands of six inch screws into white oak planking a schooner and never ever had a battery fail or raised much of a sweat in the process... What's not to like?

The Yankee, once a standard item in everyone's tool box, has been somewhat eclipsed by rechargeable drill/drivers but for driving small to medium screws and drilling pilot holes there is a lot to be said for this venerable bit of toolbox tech!

For those who are saying "But what about drilling holes in stainless steel and suchlike?". Well, I'm not a complete Luddite and I still have a corded drill and small drill press when the need arises.

Better yet, all three tools combined cost about the same as a single DeWalt rechargeable battery here at the local overpriced ACE hardware ...
