a tale of two boats...

I love teardrop campers but some of these are just silly expensive, an "apocalyptic scenario" to take note of, and the parable of the ox...

Those overpriced signature teardrops got me thinking about the cost of boats and why we spend so much for so little some of the time...

For instance, over at ebay, there is someone selling a Lyle Hess designed Nor'sea 27 with a buy-it-now price of $60K which, if you ask me, is a lot of money for a 27-foot boat no matter how good or hip it happens to be.

Now, don't get me wrong, I really admire the work of Lyle Hess and his designs do sail well but, in my opinion, the hipness factor far out paces the utility of the boat...

At $60K that boils down to around $7.41 a pound displacement wise.

As it happens, ebay also has a couple of CAL 27's at the moment... One a turnkey boat with a buy-it-now price of $12.5K (which I suspect is too high) and a project boat currently with a high bid of less than $300.

So, what you have is two different boats that pretty much will do the same thing but a helluva lot of cost differential. Some of which can be accounted for by a better build quality and a more yacht like interior but mostly the real difference is simply hipness factor.

The bottom line is that no matter how hip you are, a 27-foot boat is still a 27-foot boat and in terms of living space and comfort both boats are going to be equal... Of course, as long as we're comparing things, the CAL 27 will enable faster passages and sail rings around the Nor'sea which is something you might want to factor into the equation as well.
