Ten cents on the dollar...

Insanity in New Hampshire, a song about cupcakes, and a new religion pops up...

So here's a thought... Sure, I know the economy sucks and the folks running the show are fools, incompetents, and people of limited vision, who at this dark moment of history are doing the "let's change the deck chairs on the Titanic" tango...  But, when you think about it, providing you have a brain and don't think a Vertu phone makes sense, it's not really that bad a time to be poor on a boat!

For a start, there are any number of great deals on boats if you're willing to go with a perfectly seaworthy but not flavor of the month sailboat that needs some sweat equity to make it the right boat for you. Once you have a boat you can then cruise and anchor in the very same places where those basic, affordable designs of modest size that cost $170,000 hang out. Think about that for a moment... In today's market $17,000 will buy you a helluva lot of boat!

Back when we bought our first GPS (a Trimble that still works by the way) it cost a small fortune ($1000 in 1992 dollars) but today by contrast you can get one that is a fraction of the size, more accurate, and does a host of things only available in Sci-Fi books in the early 90's for less than a lunch for two at a funky Caribbean beach bar...

Pretty much the same can be said for a lot of gear in the electronics realm, new stuff is cheaper and as a result used stuff is more along the lines of pennies on the dollar or simply free... Free has a certain lovely ring to it does it not?

In the same vein a lot of other gear is cheap as well. For instance, the Bruce anchor once the hippest of hip ground tackle on all the best boats is now considered as fashionable as a mullet haircut and consigned to sit at nautical swap meets unappreciated and can be yours for only ten cents on the dollar or less.

So, when you stop and think about it, all those silver lining stories have a certain basis in fact...
